You have a family reunion coming up, and you can’t wait to meet all your favorite aunts and uncles again along with some new members of the family. Whether It’s been a year or many years, it’s always a great time, but planning it can be stressful. It will be a great opportunity to plan some fun activities for your family members to enjoy and have a good time.
While you’re deciding on activities for the reunion, remember that an event like this is meant for family members to spend as much time together as possible, but also to bond and create lasting memories. Plan your reunion with this goal in mind and make sure your activities will have everyone participating. Think about activities will allow the participation of large groups of people and allow people to talk to each other, not be forced into solitude. If separating up into smaller groups is required, pairing up teams that don’t know each other very well is a great way to get them engaging with one another.
Here are some tips that may ease the stress of planning the reunion.
1. Icebreakers: Reunions usually occur after long periods of time, so there’s bound to be new family members like in-laws or cousins. Breaking the ice and introducing the new members of the family is a good way to start the day. Of course, you don’t have to limit these activities to new members only. It’s fun learning things you didn’t already know about familiar family members too.
2. Make sure you include some fun games in your reunion planning. Games that members of all ages can participate in. Games are a great way to get people engaging and it can take away some of the awkward forced conversation, by giving you an immediate topic to discuss.
3. Once you’re all at the reunion, it’s a great idea to take pictures (or video) of the entire family together. Getting a photo of the whole family together isn’t always easy, even if you all live in the same city, getting all together can be a challenge. With smartphones these days, we always have a camera handy. But it can be wise to have a nicer camera around for these events. Reach out to the family in advance and see if anyone is a photographer and willing to take a few photos at the event, or just has a nice DSLR camera they would be willing to bring along.
4. Round off the reunion with some classic storytelling. Embarrassing or funny stories are the best. Pay attention as your reunion is unfolding to funny things happening at the event so you can remind others to share that particular story. Or take the time to learn a few stories from family members that you can share to get the sharing started.
Family reunions are always fun, but boosting the atmosphere with some fun activities that will get everyone’s spirits raised.
